Cologne/Hanau - ENGIE Deutschland has been awarded the contract as general contractor (GC) for the construction of the Hanau joint power plant (GKH) of Mainova and Stadtwerke Hanau in an EU-wide tender. As a leading specialist in technology, energy and service, ENGIE is thus responsible for the turnkey construction of the gas engine power plant, which is to be ready to supply the city of Hanau with district heating from July 2024. Construction is scheduled to start in January 2023. The planned plant is a highly efficient combined heat and power (CHP) unit that will replace the current heat supply from the Staudinger coal-fired power plant. "We are pleased to contribute to establishing a future concept for supplying the city of Hanau with green district heating today. In this way, we are fulfilling our ENGIE-wide mission to accompany our customers on the path to climate neutrality," says Bernd Winkelmann, Regional Manager Region East at ENGIE Germany.
"In addition to the forward-looking alignment for future operation with hydrogen, the use of waste heat from the data center being built in the immediate vicinity is also conceivable," emphasizes GKH Managing Director Winand Zeggel. "With the highly efficient combined heat and power plant, a sustainable solution has been found for the city of Hanau," adds GKH Managing Director Matthias Fernitz.
The GKH generates heat and electricity by means of highly efficient cogeneration. It consists of three gas engines with a total thermal and electrical output of 30 megawatts each, two gas-fired hot water boilers with eight megawatts each, two pressurized heat storage tanks and three district heating pumps.
For the implementation, the ENGIE experts contribute their comprehensive technical know-how and their many years of expertise from comparable projects - first and foremost the experience with the construction of the CHP in Gera and the realization of the lighthouse project for environmentally friendly and low-emission electricity and heat supply GAMOR in Saarbrücken.
