The time is now: The climate-neutral data center
Energy transition presents data centers with challenges like virtually no other industry: Neither building grounds nor electrical energy are sufficiently available. At the same time, the need for a powerful digital infrastructure is growing exponentially.
In addition, there is the self-regulation initiative with the "Pact for Climate-Neutral Data Centers", which key cloud providers, operators of data centers and IT business associations have agreed on. This states that all data centers within Europe will operate sustainably by 2030 at the latest and will therefore not contribute to increasing climate-damaging gases in the atmosphere. The paper "Shaping Europe`s Digital Future" of the European Green Deal goes further and calls for climate neutrality of data centers by 2030.
What are the consequences?
In particular, the "Pact for Climate-Neutral Data Centers" foresees concrete steps towards a sustainable data center. New data centers must meet the annual power usage effectiveness (PUE) target by 2025 and existing data centers by 2030. For cool climates, a value of up to 1.3 is targeted; for warm climates, a value of at least 1.4 or better.
In addition, data centers are expected to draw 75 percent of their power requirements from sustainably generated or renewable energy by 2025 and 100 percent by 2030. This is a huge challenge, because data centers are playing an increasingly important role in our modern society; demand is rising and so is power consumption.
