Trouble-free operation of sensitive medical equipment, reliable cooling of surgery theatres and intensive care units as well as a comfortable room temperature for patients: hospitals demand the highest requirements on availability and operational reliability of refrigeration – including a major hospital in suburb of Sydney. Just recently, eight water-cooled QUANTUM chillers began operation there, ensuring an optimal climate for people and medical equipment. These QUANTUM models use the eco-friendly refrigerant R-1234ze. In combination with their energy-efficient operation, the chillers reduce the hospital’s ecological footprint related with refrigeration supply to a minimum.
Absolute operational reliability at the hospital
Over the past months, ENGIE Refrigeration replaced all the systems on-site, adapted the QUANTUM chillers precisely to their specific environment and provided optimal integration into the existing hydraulic system. This groundwork formed the foundation necessary to enable the eight QUANTUMS to ensure the safe and reliable supply of refrigeration. The chillers are characterised by their soft start-up – in other words, low start-up currents – as well as their extremely low-noise and low-vibration operation. Moreover, they feature an impressively high power density, which adds up to maximum energy efficiency combined with a small footprint. Further more, the use of state-of-the-art electrical filter technology in the QUANTUM chillers supports operational reliability and safeguards highly sensitive hospital equipment against electrical faults. In addition, the multiple compressor configuration in each chiller ensures high availability at all times. The oil-free and magnetic bearing compressor technology incorporated into every QUANTUM chiller is characterised by hardwearing operation – another important added value for the Australian hospital, enabling it to enjoy significant savings in maintenance and operating costs.
Proven expertise in clinical processes

For the past ten years, the refrigeration specialist has been equipping clinics and hospitals with its QUANTUM chillers. At present, over 150 hospitals worldwide are using the company’s proven technology “Made in Germany” – that’s around 210 chillers with a refrigeration capacity of around 120,000 kilowatts installed to keep things running smoothly.
