Infrastructure provider Eurofiber Netz concludes contract with Quartierswerk Gartenfeld
Berlin - The innovative and sustainable residential and energy project 'Das neue Gartenfeld' in Berlin-Spandau will be equipped with high-performance fiber optic infrastructure. Berlin-based fiber optic provider Eurofiber Netz GmbH (Eurofiber) and Quartierswerk Gartenfeld GmbH (Quartierswerk) have signed a contract to this end. Quartierswerk is a joint venture between ENGIE Deutschland GmbH and GASAG Solution Plus GmbH.
Over 4,500 residential units and more than 600 commercial units are being built on an area of around 31 hectares in the Spandau development area. The quarter combines living space with jobs for over 10,000 people. Among other things, Quartierswerk will be responsible for the climate-neutral heat supply for the new urban quarter and for the digital networking of the new quarter. Construction of the local heating network for 'Das neue Gartenfeld' is scheduled to start next year.
As part of the cooperation, Eurofiber is building a high-performance telecommunications network for private and commercial tenants on the site of the Smart City project using the latest fiber optic technology. More than 10 km of fiber optics are expected to be installed for this purpose. New buildings will allow fiber optics to be laid directly into the apartments (fiber-to-the-home). With Open Access, Eurofiber enables open access to the telecommunications market and offers all market participants the opportunity to market their fiber optic products without discrimination.
A second, independent network is also being set up for the smart overall control of the district's own systems, which can be expanded in future to include a so-called LoRaWAN network (Long Range Wide Area Network), which enables the automation of processes and the remote control of third-party systems. This will lead to a more efficient use of resources and a reduction in energy consumption and costs.
Marco Sick, CEO of Eurofiber, emphasizes: "With the development of the 'Neues Gartenfeld’ through our state-of-the-art fiber optic network, we are setting a milestone in the development of smart cities. Together with Quartierswerk, we are not only bringing forward-looking connectivity, but also a new level of quality of life to one of Berlin's most ambitious new construction projects. Our aim is to use state-of-the-art fiber optic technology and intelligent network solutions to create a basis for connected, energy-efficient and sustainable living. This project is proof that technological progress and ecological responsibility can go hand in hand to shape the cities of tomorrow."
Martin Kraft, Head of Bid, Project & Analytics at Eurofiber and responsible for the project, adds: "Thanks to the very constructive cooperation with Quartierswerk in advance, we were able to develop an innovative and sustainable solution that allows a high-performance connection to our backbone and thus enables the management of extensive telecommunications services. With over 10,000 fibers that are routed from the central point of presence (PoP) to each of the individual buildings, we are ensuring a future-oriented gigabit-capable connection for all users in the long term."
Johann Cavar, Managing Director of Quartierswerk: "With the cooperation and collaboration between Quartierswerk and Eurofiber, we have achieved an important milestone in the development of digitalization, also for the future residents of our lighthouse project ‘Das neue Gartenfeld’.
Jan Kunde, authorized signatory of Quartierswerk and project manager of GASAG Solution Plus: "We are very pleased to have won Eurofiber for the construction of the fiber optic network. With a convincing range of services and a shared understanding of long-term, partnership-based cooperation, the Eurofiber team was able to impressively assert itself in a broad selection process. With the pure open access approach in particular, we are convinced that we will be able to offer the residents of the district a wide range of tariffs in the future, supported by a high-performance fiber optic infrastructure that will also be able to cope with the growing data streams of the coming decades."
The tenants of the urban quarter will thus benefit from the use of a future-proof and stable fiber optic infrastructure as well as sustainable and efficient energy generation.
