Cologne, January 14, 2020 – What can climate protection look like in schools? The students of the Ernst-Mach-Gymnasium in Hürth demonstrated this in an exemplary manner last year, landing them right at the top of the podium in the 2019 Energy Saving Champion school competition for the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The high school students were delighted to receive both cash and non-cash prizes worth 2,500 euros as well as public relations support from their sponsor ENGIE Germany, especially through communication measures during the online voting phase. The next round of the nationwide school competition is now starting – and ENGIE Germany will again sponsor the winning school from North Rhine-Westphalia in 2020. "At ENGIE Germany, it is important to us to motivate young people to actively engage with the topics of the environment and energy saving. That is why we have been involved in the Energy Saver Competition for seven years. Every year, it is impressive to see the creativity and dedication of the students", says Astrid Grüter, Chief Communication Officer at ENGIE Germany. The commitment to the Energy Saver Competition is entirely in line with ENGIE Germany's zero carbon strategy: The leading specialist for technology, energy and service in Germany accompanies its customers from industry and trade, municipalities, real estate and private households on the path to a climate-neutral future.
Application phase for energy saver
The Energy Saver Contest is an initiative of the non-profit consulting company co2online and is supported by the campaign "Mein Klimaschutz", commissioned by the Federal Ministry for the Environment. The award recognizes the most efficient, creative and sustainable climate protection project by and with students in each state. The competition consists of two rounds: In the first round, a jury assesses the submitted projects at the state level, consisting of experts from science, politics and the media; all winners of the individual states then participate in the nationwide online voting. The winning schools receive cash and material prizes worth a total of 50,000 euros. In addition, the "Energy Saver" competition honors particularly enduring commitment to climate protection with the special "Long-term commitment" award. Teachers and pupils of all school types and ages, either individually or as a team, can apply until March 31, 2020.
